Tradition counts for a lot in this part of town. Local residents are proud to host the oldest street fair in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is one of the nation’s oldest as well. Celebrating its 65th year on June 15-16, 2019, North Beach Festival is free to all. In the historic and charming Little Italy neighborhood that everyone loves, the heart of the festival is Washington Square, one of the city’s oldest parks.

Viva Italia!

Banners in red, green and white decorate awnings and street lamps throughout the district to welcome tens of thousands during two full days of free entertainment, live music, Italian street painting, kid’s chalk area and 140+ booths and stalls with arts and crafts. It’s a good idea to come hungry! An Italian-style street fair is a great place to find delicious made-from-scratch house specialities from pizza to chocolate. This street fair is known for plenty of fabulous food and al fresco beverage gardens.  Three stages with live entertainment. 

Blessing of the Animals

An annual highlight is the traditional Blessing of the Animals ceremony on both Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi at 610 Vallejo Street.

Where to find the fair

The big North Beach Festival takes place on Grant Avenue between Columbus Avenue and Filbert Street, and on Columbus Avenue between Broadway and Green Street and on Vallejo and Green streets between Grant Avenue and Columbus Avenue. The street fair is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Getting There

The festival takes place rain or shine...the only thing that could dampen your spirits would be attempting to drive to the party. Streets will be closed to traffic and parking will be suspended in much of North Beach. SF Muni bus lines’ routing for 8X, 30, 39, and 45 will be affected during the weekend, however It's still easy to get there via Muni bus, streetcar, BART, cable car or on foot.
