Summer street fairs are a San Francisco fixture. Free of admission, with live entertainment, plenty of arts and crafts to browse and activities for kids, every neighborhood has one of their own. Haight-Ashbury has one of the best known, long-established street fairs, held on the second Saturday in June from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. This year marks the 42nd annual event.
The Haight-Ashbury posters
The first Haight-Ashbury Street Fair was held in 1978. Each and every summer fair has commissioned its own commemorative poster, some of which have gone on to become iconic images and collector items. (If you should come across a first edition poster from the fair’s inaugural year, it’s valuable!)
Music, food, drink and browsing
Both the Masonic Stage and the Stanyan Stage at two ends of Haight Street will host several live music performances until 5 p.m. Food and drink will range from more than 30 booths will be serving pizza, BBQ, Thai food, corn dogs, lemonade and lots more.
From the edge of Golden Gate Park for six blocks stretching east, 200 booth holders will have displays of artwork, crafts, clothing, jewelry, accessories, services and wares. Adding to the assortment, the diverse assortment of independent merchants of Haight-Ashbury will fling their doors open to join the fun...so that means ice cream, handcrafted beer, burgers and lots more. Children's Alley will be offering family entertainment on Belvedere Street, off Haight Street.
Several buses run through or near the Haight Street Fair, including #6, 33, 37, 43, 66, and 7. Alternatively, take the N-Judah train to the stop at Cole and Carl Streets. From there, walk north on Cole four blocks to Haight Street.
