In a special pop-up happening called Flower Piano, 12 pianos are tucked away amid the wildflowers in the San Francisco Botanical Garden for 14 days in July. Inside the 1,017-acre Golden Gate Park, the lovely arboretum is a showcase for flora and fauna divided into regional origins of the world, as well as a redwood grove.
The San Francisco Botanical Garden will be sounding as beautiful as it looks with the addition of scheduled and impromptu concerts in collaboration with Sunset Piano. Follow the sound of tinkling ivories to find the location of the pianos in the Garden of Fragrance, Moon Viewing Garden, Waterfowl Pond, Zellerbach Garden, California Native Garden, South Africa Garden and more scenic spots in the 55-acre garden.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to step up and sit down to show off their Ravel, Ragtime or even Rolling Stones repertoire.
The pianos are rescued ones, described by the organizers as too good to throw out but good enough to recycle for this occasion. Sunset Piano was launched in 2013 by local artists Mauro Ffortisimo and Dean Mermell, who have been using pop-up locations around the Bay Area for their experimental -- and warmly welcomed -- surprise piano placements.
Admission to San Francisco Botanical Gardens is $9 adults, $6 youth (12--17) and free to children (4 and under). San Francisco city and county residents with I.D. are admitted free of charge. Botanical Garden has a last entry at 6 p.m. during summer months.
Enter Golden Gate Park near the corner of Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way to find the Botanical Garden Main Gate on Ninth Avenue, or come in via the North/Friend Gate on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. It’s a short walk from the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum or California Academy of Sciences, where signs point the way.
